Burnham on Sea U3A

TABLE TENNIS

Table Tennis 1

We were the first table tennis group to form when the Burnham U3A first started. I have been their group leader ever since.

We started with eight or nine members with various degrees of skill – or none!

Our numbers increased so much that in time we split into two groups one on Wednesdays and the other on Fridays – now group three.

Group one plays 1.30 – 3.30 on Wednesdays at the BAY Club. We retain many of our initial members sadly losing several over the years, but gaining new members also. At present we have 13.

We have played friendly matches with Taunton, Cheddar, and Weston super Mare U3As and pride ourselves on a good standard.

We are a friendly and caring group – supportive in difficult times – and enjoy the social and physical aspects of our sport.

Group Leader is Joan Webb.

Table Tennis 2

This group was formed in 2001 and its name sums up what we do.

We play doubles at all times because there is limited time available and a full complement of players.

Consequently there is scope for someone to start another table tennis group!

UPDATE, December '07

Sixteen people play every Monday afternoon at the Baptist Church. They play doubles on two tables so that everyone has a turn. They keep fit and have a lot of fun. Gilli.

Group Leaders: Beryl Paling, 781228 and Thelma Pike, 785107

Meetings : Monday afternoons weekly

Table Tennis 3

This group caters for players who already have a sound understanding of the game and can play reasonably well.

Again doubles are played throughout because of the time pressure on the two tables.

There are about 17 people in the group and weekly attendance varies from 9 to 14.

The aim of the leader is to provide exercise and companionship for its members

Group Leader: Shirley Connell 795096.

Meetings: Friday afternoons, weekly, 1.00pm to 3.00pm in the BAY Centre, Cassis Road, Burnham on Sea.

Table Tennis 4

The fourth table tennis group has an average attendance of 12-13 players.

It meets on Tuesday mornings in the Baptist Church Hall from 10.00 to 11.00 am.

Doubles are again played to make best use of table space.

Group leader Rachel Rowse describes it as a friendly group. Its members play for fun and enjoyment as well as a little exercise.
