Burnham on Sea U3A

Swimming Group

Polly Smith started this group in early 2006 but after an accident in May was unable to continue lessons until recently. She has now returned to lead the swimming group and is pleased that four of her original group have continued to train during her absence.

The group was intended for tuition purposes, but others are able to come and do their own thing. She acknowledges the difficulties created by not having a U3A dedicated session at the swimming pool, especially as most older people prefer to learn to swim in private. However, members who have joined the group have not found this to be a disadvantage. So do not be daunted.

The group leader states, “Everyone has progressed to a good standard of swimming on all 3 main strokes. There is one complete non- swimmer, who, at the beginning was absolutely petrified of the water, but is now not that far off swimming, due solely to her perseverance.”.

The group meets on a Monday at 12 noon for an hour sometimes longer, but when the schools are on holiday or have finished their swimming programme, then the group meets on Mondays at 9.00am.
