Burnham on Sea U3A

Latin

The Latin Group meets every Friday morning from 10.00am to 12.00 noon at the Community Centre.

We take great pleasure in and from each other’s company and appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience found around the table which adds to our explanation of the language and civilisation.

Any new-comer would certainly need to have learned some Latin and be strongly motivated to advance their knowledge. This is because the group is now in its 11th year and has a lot of shared learning behind it.

One message is: don’t let this put you off. Some new members have successfully integrated into the group in recent times. The other message is that should enough people be interested why not float the idea of a second group? You never know; a new leader may emerge and we would certainly share our information and experience to help this happen.

We find the study fascinating and especially enjoy discovering how it has influenced our language. As an example our word candidate derives from the Latin word for shining white, candidus, because those standing for election rubbed white chalk into their togas to show that they were “whiter than white”. Now, there’s a reflection!

The group is led by Olga Davies and Jean Hancock.
