![]() | Obituary – George David Perry David Perry’s connection with Burnham goes back to his marriage with Diana, herself born and bred here, achieving local fame at seventeen by winning a competition to design the Burnham Coat of Arms, still in use today. David himself was a North Country man, educated at Douai School in Berkshire from where he went straight into the army as one of the last National Service recruits. On his ‘demob’ he was accepted by Newcastle University to study for a Geography Degree. There followed a career in industry, a happy marriage producing a son and two daughters and on retirement, eventual return to Diana’s home county. Always an athletic man, joining the U3A inspired him to start cycling again and with Diana, he joined the Barn Dance group and led the Strollers no. 2. His experience in personnel management made him an obvious choice for the committee and he rapidly became Deputy Chairman with responsibility for new members and Group Leaders and later became Chairman of our U3A. He was always keen to try out new initiatives to keep the development of the ‘University’ idea alive. When U3Awere invited to provide a team for the ‘Sounds and Voices’ tapes for the Blind, David became its Editor and his chatty, informal presentations delighted his listeners. For several years he fought the onset of serious illness with cheerful inconsequence—at least to outsiders—but a month or so before his death the treatment suddenly seemed to become ineffective. Diana nursed him as he became steadily weaker until his doctor ordered him into hospital for re-assessment. Sadly, it was not to be and his condition deteriorated rapidly. David was relaxed and easy in company but he was a man who stuck to his guns when he had an aim he wished to achieve. We need minds like his in the U3A and we shall miss his quiet friendliness and courtesy even more. We have said ‘Goodbye’ to a real gentleman. Our sympathy and prayers go out to Diana, his children and grandchildren. Mary Olsen |
We have a new Committee elected at the AGM in June.
There is a feeling of excitement within the U3a. A feeling that we are on to something with enormous possibilities!
There is a wide range of opportunities to learn something new and at the same time gain companionship and more out of life.
The secret of the U3A is that everyone can contribute through the sharing of their interests and taking part in the wide range of activities available.
If you are recently retired come and see us at our regular meeting for Coffee on Wednesdays at the Methodist School Hall in College Street - between 10.00.am and 11.30.am.

With our Action Plan for the next few years in place, we hope to improve, with your help, what the Burnham U3A can offer you, and indeed what you can offer the U3A. One part of the plan is to improve communications, of which one means is this website. We are planning to provide more in the way of recent ‘news’ and also add a ‘Diary of Events’ so that you will be kept more up-to-date of what is happening in the future, particularly the near future that the newsletter is unable to provide. But of course, providing ‘news’ and a ‘Diary of Events’ is dependent upon you – the members – informing the web master with relevant information. So please contribute to your movement to help make it more successful.
