Burnham on Sea U3A
This French group is in its third year. Although lessons are oral based, the structure of the language and the culture of its country are discussed.
Some preparation of the lesson by students is required each week and regular attendance is a must in order to make progress.
The group meets on each Thursday morning at 10.00am in the Community Centre.
Group Leader is Colette Winfield.
FRENCH GROUP 2.
French Group 2 is aimed at people who are well past the beginners’ stage who wish to improve vocabulary and conversational skills.
We meet in Room 1 every Tuesday morning from 10.00 to 11.00 am. but our finishing time is flexible and sometimes we stay on a little to complete a particularly interesting project.
Generally we take it in turns to lead the class, the leader preparing activities and giving prior notice to the rest of the the group the week before. This can take the form of initiating a conversation on a given topic, learning new phrases and vocabulary, or an aspect of grammar which perhaps has been neglected. Each week we endeavour to listen to some spoken French by using a recording, usually in connection with our course book, currently Hugo’s Advanced French. Some part of each session is often given over to reading and translating from this book.
We have been very lucky in gaining much help from French speaker, Colette Winfield, who acts as our tutor, generally once a month, and then listening and comprehension are the order of the day. Most of us find this quite testing but very enjoyable and it is rewarding when we discover that each time we have understood a little more. Eileen Evans attends for part of most sessions and gives much help with grammar and colloquial expressions.
What have we achieved? I am certain that we have all learnt more and better French, even if results are hard to measure. We gain much pleasure from our meetings and aim to continue learning with fun and enjoyment.
