Creative writing

To be a “creative writer” you have to have some imagination, a reasonable grasp of the English Language and an interest in the world around you. Also you should enjoy recounting and adapting your experiences and observations.

Most people read stories or novels. Some even read poetry. Therefore most people know the composition of a short story. Usually the hardest task is keeping it short, not going too deeply into descriptive passages and keeping to the subject!

Our group meets once a month for two hours. We have a list of subjects, agreed upon six months in advance. Also, we nearly always have an extra task; sixty word stories, a poem, a limerick or a descriptive piece.

We enjoy reading our stories and poems to the rest of the group and most newsletters these days will contain one of our offerings. It is an extra joy to see something in print.

Last year we produced an anthology of stories and poems, a task which took a considerable amount of time and therefore cannot be undertaken too frequently! The editor has to allow the group member to choose a selection of his or her best work to put forwards for inclusion, otherwise the task would be monumental. In short, all you need is pen and paper, imagination, enthusiasm and enjoy something of a challenge. Above all, writing is excellent exercise for those “little grey cells”.

Meetings take place on the first Friday of the month, 10.00am to 12.00 noon.

The Group Leader is Annette Moore, 787818.
