Burnham on Sea U3A
When Fay and I took over the co-ordination of the “Welfare Group” about eight years ago, it was so that we could send cards to sick folk wishing them well and condolence cards to the bereaved. If people were in hospital without family living nearby, we would try to visit.
Later the name was changed to “Contact”.
At present we have eighteen regular members on the team, plus two people who are prepared to drive in an emergency. These drivers are reimbursed at the rate of 40 per mile. We also have three men who are prepared to help when male assistance is needed.
Help is provided should any members require details of suitable travel insurance, or finding reliable workmen. We have leaflets in our box on several subjects, so do come and ask to look through them but we ask you not to remove any.
Since the coffee morning and venue were changed, Fay is unable to continue as she has commitments with U3A of Highbridge. I now lead the group with the help of Rene Klein.
The success of “Contact and Reception” depends on group leaders and members informing us when folk are sick, bereaved or in need of a friendly visit.
Because the Reception Table has always been by the door, we try to greet everyone and keep a special eye open for newcomers. We explain what the U3A has to offer and suggest that they may have interests to share. We give them a copy of the Newsletter and introduce them to group leaders who may be present. We point out where to pay their subscription and suggest they read the noticeboard.
For this reception work to succeed, we feel all members should welcome strangers and try to draw them into friendly conversation or ask them to take part in the quiz. This will prevent any feeling of “cliquiness”. We celebrate our ongoing success, as our membership stands at well over five hundred. We need to remember that some folk are shy and find it daunting to walk into a hall full of chattering strangers. Can we remember, when we first entered the hall?
