Burnham on Sea U3A

Sorry, this group is temporarily not operating.
This small Group`s aim is for members to enjoy listening together to good music. Our scope is quite wide – Western music from about 1200AD to the present day. We also aim to extend members` areas of musical interest and their critical appreciation skills. We meet on the last Wednesday of the month from 215 –415. New members are most welcome. Group Leader: Mary Hancock 783806.
Music Appreciation :
Not as austere as you would think it might be, not too deep in the region of heavy classical music, but a bit of everything to listen to and deliberate on.
`Our Leader`, -- Mary, is one who is gifted in the world of music having a library of recordings which would rival HMV stocks and then having the presence of mind to select an entertaining programme on each occasion we meet ------- that being the last Wednesday of each month between 2 and 4 in the afternoon.
We listen to Bizet, Brahms, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Calamity Jane,Fiddler on the Roof, Skaters Waltz and Summertime with equal alacrity. Not that we like everything we hear, either from the music score itself or the manner of its rendering .We do talk about the music we listen to and Mary often gives us insight into the technical side of the performing art by relating her experiences, viewing supporting written works/pictures and then with the aid of her own instruments explaining just what you have to do to get the right sounds out. e.g. I never realised how variations in temperature can affect the sound of a wood wind instrument.
Perhaps this is a good time to say how we similarly enjoyed a presentation by Ken Henton on `Brass Music `at the January meet. For someone like myself who does not play an instrument and who lacks any familiarity with the construction, design and variation of similar instruments it is rewarding to get the opportunity to see, and if one is very good, to touch, that which you may have been listening to.
Yes, we are a small group. Yes, we do have an open mind on the music we listen to, and finally ------- Yes, we welcome you to join us at Music Appreciation and shape the future programme.
Mike Lyddon.
