Burnham on Sea U3A
The first Book Group was established in Sept 05 meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 2 to 4.
It was originally decided to restrict the number of members to 12 in order to allow everyone ample opportunity to take part in all discussions, but this has recently been increased to 14 as this number appeared to work rather better. The group has operated with its full complement of members from its inception. This, of course, opens the opportunity for someone to start a second group should the need arise.
The format is as follows: Each month a book is chosen by one member. We all read it. It is then reviewed and discussed at the following meeting. Everyone chooses a book in turn.
We have been fortunate in that Burnham Public Library has only once failed to find the right number of books for us each month thereby saving members from having to buy their own copies, although many prefer to do just that.
The group's aim is simply to introduce different books and authors to our members encouraging them to read titles they would probably not have chosen for themselves. Since they are already keen readers there is no need to ''educate'' them in this skill. We meet together for pure enjoyment and to share the pleasure we derive from books.
May I add that I have been somewhat surprised by the fact that that only women have ever shown an interest in joining this group. Do men in the U3A not read?? Now there’s a challenge for you!
The Group leader is Jean Smith, 795379.
